Improving Ensemble-TCP Performance on Asymmetric Networks

چکیده
For the World Wide Web, the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) are two important protocols. However, interactions between these two protocols, combined with the bandwidth asymmetry of network access technologies such as ADSL, can lead to inefficient HTTP/TCP performance. This paper investigates the effects of bandwidth asymmetry on Ensemble-TCP, a protocol designed to coordinate multiple HTTP/TCP connections to improve Web document transfer performance. The evaluation is conducted using the ns-2 network simulator. The paper also proposes and evaluates two new schemes, ACC-Ensemble and AF-Ensemble, to improve Ensemble-TCP performance on asymmetric networks. The simulation results show that AF-Ensemble and ACC-Ensemble perform better (often 1050% faster) than Reno TCP and Ensemble-TCP for typical user-level Web browsing activity on asymmetric networks.

A Differentiated Pricing Framework for Improving the Performance of the Elastic Traffics in Data Networks
Rate allocation has become a demanding task in data networks as diversity in users and traffics proliferate. Most commonly used algorithm in end hosts is TCP. This is a loss based scheme therefore it exhibits oscillatory behavior which reduces network performance. Moreover, since the price for all sessions is based on the aggregate throughput, losses that are caused by TCP affect other sessions...

An asymmetric network is one in which there is a mismatch between the characteristics of the forward and reverse channel. Typically, the forward channel is capable of high transmission rates and the reverse channel has lesser bandwidth. Cable modem networks and satellite networks are some technologies that exhibit network asymmetry. TCP, due to its widespread acceptance, is also used in asymmet...

متن کاملPerformance evaluation of HTTP/TCP on asymmetric networks
As the Internet users grow, new network technologies are emerging. Those include ADSL and cable modem, which essentially provide asymmetric bandwidth for uplink and downlink to the user’s connection. In this paper, we investigate the behavior of HTTP/TCP protocols on such asymmetric networks, and present the analytic results of the mean throughput of TCP. The transfer time of Web documents by H...

In this paper, TCP performance issues in bandwidth asymmetric networks are investigated. Related works to improve TCP performance in bandwidth asymmetric networks are introduced and analyzed. A new mechanism to improve TCP performance in two way traffic over asymmetric networks is also proposed in this paper, which can further improve TCP performance by assigning the bandwidth rates over the re...
